This workshop provides an overview of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and related support strategies. A brief history of autism is provided as well as a review of the prevalence and etiology of the disorder. The underlying core characteristics of ASD based on the new criteria put forth by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, Fifth Edition (APA, 2013) are covered in detail. In particular, the social-communicative deficits and atypicalities are fully described as well as the restricted/repetitive behaviors that are commonly exhibited by individuals with ASD.
Secondary characteristics and behavioral difficulties are also reviewed. From a learning perspective, this workshop covers the common cognitive processing difficulties that individuals with autism are faced with. The tendency for individuals with ASD to be visual thinkers, the challenges of abstract thinking, and the difficulties with taking on another’s perspective are all covered within the context of describing the educational barriers that may arise for a learner with ASD.
Because much of the extant research on autism intervention comes from the field of behavior analysis, this workshop reviews the foundational principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and how it relates to designing effective behavior support plans and teaching the learner with autism. In addition to ABA, specific methodologies related to functional communication training, natural environment teaching, and visual support strategies are briefly covered. Other topics such as the importance of generalizing skills, and the role of the family and school personnel are also reviewed.
This workshop satisfies the New York State Education Department requirements for a 3-hour autism training. The presenter provides many real-life examples and scenarios both within the school and home settings to allow participants to establish a better understanding of the concepts presented. Participants are also directed to many useful resources.
